Digital K'Nex
K'Nex is a building toy system, similar to Legos. However, instead of using bricks, K'Nex uses interlocking rods and brackets, or connectors. There are also a variety of other components, including wheels, gears, spacers, and several other parts. To learn more about K'Nex, please visit knex.co.uk.
I have been using K'Nex since childhood and have become very experienced. Using Autodesk Inventor, I reverse engineered all of the parts in the K'Nex system, allowing me to digitally build models without being limited by a finite number of parts available. |
WoodsWork
Every year, Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church, in Severna Park, MD, hosts a mission trip called WoodsWork. WoodsWork is a week long mission trip for high school youth in partnership with Habitat for Humanity. The leadership team, composed of students with adult advisors, choose a Habitat chapter to partner with to build the frames of homes and assist on other construction and community-improvement projects. The team also plans accommodations, housing, transportation, and all other aspects of the trip. Over 100 youth and 40 adult leaders attend annually.
The work projects are completed by “work groups” of four students, including a student leader, and an adult supervisor. The students develop a strong sense of teamwork as they work with their group throughout the week to complete tasks (such as the frame of a wall) and then work with other groups to integrate their parts into the larger project. |

As a faith-based experience, it is also a special occasion for youth to grow in community and fellowship with one another as they serve and worship Christ. This is fostered through large-group worship sessions and small group discussions.
Personally, I have participated in WoodsWork as a youth for four years from 2016 to 2019. During that time, I was appointed as the youth leader of my work group twice. Additionally, in those four years, I helped to build 11 homes, demolished and renovate multiple houses and structures, build benches and tables for community parks, and helped give back to the community in multiple other ways. It was very rewarding for me to see the massive impact we left on every community we visited. Furthermore, the building experience, teamwork, and leadership will undoubtedly have a lasting impact.
